While both the non-aligned movement and the group of Arab member states at the United Nations (U.N.) advised the Security Council in consultations on the Middle East on Monday to unanimously act on a long-delayed Arab-proposed resolution condemning Israeli settlements, the United Kingdom said the resolution would “not get the support it needs to pass.”
In related developments, Israel’s outgoing U.N. ambassador Daniel Gillerman chose not to focus his remarks on addressing outstanding council issues on the Middle East in consultations but instead on an approximately 15-minute farewell to the consternation of some member states, namely Libya and Syria, and a polite notice (often given to all) from the Security Council chair for member states to follow the current council framework of limiting remarks to five minutes and completing their work expeditiously
(see video here).
He requested that the Security Council president instead circulate his prepared speech on the topic for discussion to council members.
